MAY MEMORIES
by Loren Fry

When I think about May, I think of the wonderful holidays. Mother's Day and Memorial Day being at the top of the list. Then comes my brother Kenny's birthday. Then the focus on baseball and the wonderful friendships and shared experiences resulting from the games. The weather brings about full canals and planting time on the farm. Watching the miracle of plants springing from dead seeds which die but are born again into a plant that yields itself many times over as it grows, matures and is harvested.
Given all that, Memorial Day was always a special time when we harvested Grandma Fry's beautiful spring Roses and Peonies, which we inherited when we moved into the house that her father built in 1902 when she moved to town. We gathered some other flowers and ferns from the garden and went to Cemetery's in Palisade, Orchard Mesa and others to decorate and remember close friends and family. Leaving them a present of the flowers and our prayers as we reflected on the blessings we received from just being around them. It was a fitting reminder of how people make lasting impressions and impacts of our lives.
MAY, a wonderful month for counting our blessing and reflecting on life
May Day

May Day was always a fun day because it was a school play day. Winding the flag of the May pole & creating a beautiful pole gives a beautiful memory & competitive spirit made it even greater. We always thought we could outdo the other schools. We also had sprint races & relay races, & three legged races which always ended in laughter. Kick ball was a favored sport but I don’t recollect competing against other schools. We also played softball or sometimes just batted balls & played a form of “money. A fly ball being worth a dollar, Two persons at a time batting. On the home front it was traditional to deliver to the door large bouquet of flowers, Knock on the door, then run & hide. When I had my own children they did it to me too.
This is the first year I didn’t get a surprise May Day basket. But my daughter took me to the farmers market and I got toato plants and that is a good present May Day present.

Honor all mothers this day!
A mom will put herself in the gap for her children. God has instilled that into us to guide teach correct discipline & love, & the greatest of these is love. Mothers are more directed to be the nurturing person but we cannot underestimate the importance & value of the fathers who are the most influential in a family unit. They are the direct link to the Father in Heaven. They are the protectors of the Mothers & children & intercede for them. HALLELUJAH!
Little House On The Farm:
By Hazel Sharon Blair
My family moved to Loma fromColorado Springs,Co (El Paso County) where I & my two Brothers were born. I’m sure that’s why I speak with an accent otherwise I might be considered to have a speech impediment.
My father worked several projects while there, the Pikes Peak Trolley & The Golden Cycle Mill.
We marveled because he spoke about the gold brick bars & we chuckled visioning anyone brave enough to walk out with one (ha ha), not realizing how much each actually weighed.
It reminds me of the story of the guy leaving his contracting job pushing a wheelbarrow with nothing but a bit of trash & straw daily. Come to find out he was stealing wheelbarrows.
My parents saved money a long time to purchase the little 60 acre Farm that became my beautiful youthful homeland & site of all the adventures of Love.
